Half the Sky

HALF THE SKY

Chair: Betty Laliberte

YOU ARE INVITED!

The Half the Sky Study Group began in 2011 after the branch read the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The group meets monthly to read and discuss issues that face women in developing countries and then moves forward with action plans to make a difference in the lives of women. Optional donations of $5 per member per meeting have paid for things such as fistula operations for women in Africa and KIVA loans to assist women in third world countries to run their own business.

The Action component focuses on LOCAL immigrant needs. We are interested in teaming with like-minded groups within our neighboring communities. Some hands-on activities have included sewing flannel pads for Days for Girls so that young women in developing countries can attend school every day, collecting bras for Save the Girls (a project to give formerly trafficked women the opportunity to own a business), and preparing snack bags for immigrants as they travel through Chicago.

Meetings are posted in the monthly AAUW Newsletter and on our Webpage.
